Mission :
- Statewide lobbying group
for funeral consumers.
- Long range planning group
for funeral consumer advocacy groups in Texas.
- Lobbying input for national
organization ( Funeral Consumers Alliance of America )
Background
Information:
- Texas has the strongest
funeral industry corporation (SCI) in the world.
- Service Corporation
International (SCI) is based in Houston.
- SCI has contributed to
the political careers of Presidents George H. and George W. Bush; many state legislators and Governors.
- The president of SCI
(Robert Waltrip) was a major contributor to the George H. Bush Presidential
Library on the Texas A&M campus in College Station Texas.
- SCI is a powerful lobby
in both Austin and Washington.
- Stewart Enterprises in
New Orleans is another powerful funeral industry "consolidator".
Method of Operation:
- SCI (or Stewart) purchases
"mom & pop" funeral homes, retains the trusted name in the local
community; then controls price, personnel and service.
- SCI "blankets"
most metropolitan areas in Texas, but they are not visible to the consumer
public.
- SCI lobbies heavily during
the Texas Legislative sessions to affect laws for their profit and your loss.
Result:
- Funeral prices in Texas
are often twice the cost of funerals in other
states that do not have the influence of SCI or Stewart.
Remedy :
- Join
your local Funeral Consumer Alliance organization and support their efforts
with your tax deductible contributions and your volunteer time.
